Home prices are soaring across the U.S., and unfortunately for homebuyers, so are mortgage rates. The result: homeownership is less affordable. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the median sales price for existing single-family homes jumped almost 16% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year. Concurrently, the average for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose from 3.1% at the end of 2021 to 5.1% by April 2022 — nearly the highest in over a decade.
